How Do Dog Groomers Deal with Cowlicks?
How Do Dog Groomers Deal with Cowlicks?

What are cowlicks?
A local dog groomer would say that cowlicks are essentially tufts of fur that may grow in either clockwise or counterclockwise directions. Since these are not that easy to detect right away, you may accidentally clip away some hair and it could look like a bald spot.

These whorls are segmented into two distinct categories – simple and tufted. The former initiate from a central point to spread out into a swirling pattern, while the latter includes the joining of the hair into a focal point. Most dogs have simple whorls but those present on elbows or on the chest are always tufted fur. The hairs present on the left side of a dog’s body are usually counterclockwise while those on the right are usually clockwise.

About 80% of all dogs have whorls in four areas of their body – the rump, back of legs, elbows and, chest, and the remaining 20% also have additional whorls on the shoulders, head and abdomen. There are some dogs, about 5%, who have whorls on their faces.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks can be considered as a special breed, they have hair growing in the form of a ridge in the opposite direction on the back.

Effective Grooming Tips

  • Make sure that the brush you are using is for the coat type of the pet you are grooming. This is crucial to the removal of soil and oils, and the right type of brush will avoid frizzing and inadequate cleaning.
  • The brushing motions should be in the form of extended, flat strokes. Be careful that your wrist does not follow a flicking upward motion, that will make the hair tips vertical.
  • The comb should match the hair in terms of having wider teeth for tougher, coarser hair.
  • Conditioner sprays are very effective during grooming because they keep the hair hydrated and hygienic.
  • While grooming, make efforts to comb down the top of the whorls flat and then put a wet towel over the region.

Cowlicks on dogs may also cause a significant difficulty when it comes to your dog’s haircut. These hair groupings can make your animal uncomfortable and aesthetically unpleasant. The best groomers are experienced professionals and you should seek out the best dog grooming salon to help your pet. It is always important to notify your dog groomer if your dog has cowlicks, to help them create the best haircut for your pet.
